For six consecutive years, Indonesia has achieved the distinction of being the most generous countries globally in 2023. This recognition comes from the Charities Aid Foundation’s (CAF) survey called the World Giving Index 2023, which stands as the largest charity survey involving over two million individuals interviewed since 2009.
CAF’s World Giving Index survey encompasses 142 countries. Participants were asked various questions, including their willingness to assist strangers they’ve recently encountered by providing money or aid for altruistic purposes.

In a press statement by CAF, their findings indicate that individuals with firm religious convictions tend to attain higher scores on the generosity index. Indonesia stands out for its populace known for its openness, amiability, and welcoming attitude toward everyone, including foreigners.
Indonesia achieved a generosity score of 68, leading as the most generous countries. Gusman Yahya, the Executive Director of Indonesian Philanthropy, highlighted the significant role of philanthropists in creating a positive societal impact, emphasizing the importance of their contributions to societal balance.

Apart from Indonesia, several other countries are noted for having a high generosity index, including:

Numerous factors contribute to Indonesia being hailed as the most generous countries, including statistics like 61% of Indonesian respondents being willing to aid strangers, 82% being prepared to donate money, and 61% expressing readiness to volunteer.
The ingrained culture of mutual assistance stands as a pivotal reason justifying Indonesia’s recognition as the most generous nation. This enduring societal ethos persists, aiming to address social disparities and uphold humanitarian endeavours for the foreseeable future.
