Coldplay Releases Vinyl Album Made from River Plastic Waste in Indonesia and Malaysia

Share:

Coldplay is known as a band that cares about the environment. Their commitment is also shown through the release of their new vinyl album, which was made from river plastic waste in Indonesia and Malaysia.

Coldplay continues to prioritize environmentally friendly principles in this project. For one 140-gram vinyl album, Coldplay used nine recycled PET plastic bottles taken from post-consumer waste.

In an interview on QVC Live on October 3, as quoted by Malay Mail, Chris Martin (Coldplay vocalist) revealed that the plastic material used for each vinyl comes from plastic waste from two rivers in two countries.

There is plastic waste from the Klang River in Selangor (Malaysia) and the Cisadane River in Jakarta (Indonesia) thanks to Coldplay’s investment in The Ocean Cleanup.

“Coldplay’s Moon Music album will be the first album in the world to be released as a 140g EcoRecord LP, while the CD edition of the album will be made from 90% recycled polycarbonate,” Coldplay’s press release quoted from Forbes, on October 7, 2024.

The Moon Music album is Coldplay’s tenth album, officially released on October 4, 2024. Music producer Max Martin, who previously helped Coldplay make the Music of The Spheres album, is still working on the project.

Reportedly, Coldplay’s Moon Music vinyl album, which uses plastic waste as its base material, will be sold on a limited basis. This album is sold at 39.99 USD per piece.

What Chris Martin and his bandmate did was clear evidence that they were not just talking about environmental issues. Coldplay often offers environmental sustainability innovations in some of its musical acts, one of which is on their world concert tour titled Music Of The Spheres.

Coldplay Donates Waste Cleaning Ship for Indonesia

After holding a successful concert in Jakarta at the end of 2023, Coldplay not only touched the hearts of fans through music but also contributed to protecting the environment.

The British band donated a garbage cleaning boat, Interceptor, to clean up the Cisadane River from plastic waste as part of their commitment to environmental sustainability.

The cleanup boat donation is one of Coldplay’s innovative steps in supporting The Ocean Cleanup’s efforts to reduce plastic pollution in waterways.

The Interceptor boat, named Neon Moon II, is expected to tackle the serious problem of plastic pollution in the Cisadane River, as they did previously in Malaysia’s Klang River.

Coldplay contributes to music and the larger sustainability movement. Their donation to the Cisadane River provides a concrete example of how celebrities can make a difference.
