28th September 2022 – The word “healing” has been used to describe tourism lately. There are several tourism, or healing, trends that have recently experienced a spike in Indonesia.

According to the data from Google Search, travel topic with keyword healing rises up to 500 percent in 2022 compared to 2021. Travel Industry Analyst Google Indonesia, Vania Anindiar, said that Indonesians are recently calling travelling as healing.

This is a form of describing travelling with a deeper meaning, like self-reflection or mental health recovery. Anindiar said in the Press Briefing on Google World Tourism Day that there are a lot of people that say “I’m healing to Bali” instead of “I’m travelling to Bali or asks where are you going for a healing trip.

From the trend of healing, comes a couple of trends such as sports tourism, sustainable tourism and open-space concept lodgings.

Sports Tourism

Co-founder and CMO of tiket.com, Gaery Undarsa, said that sports tourism is one of the activities most tourists do when healing. There are some popular areas in which tourists go cycling such as Magelang, Malang, and Bali.

Other than cycling other sports tourism such as snorkelling, nature camping, hiking, and trekking are also popular lately.

Sustainable tourism

Anindiar explained that public attention to environmental sustainability began to increase in general. Tourists are starting to show concern about airplanes’ carbon footprints, and hotel eco-lodge with limited air conditioning.

Gaery also added that tourists start to show interest in lodgings with sustainable tourism as a concept. Furthermore, tourists are starting to be aware of the elements that press the attention to sustainability issues such as air pollution, fuel and others.

Open space lodgings

Open space lodgings in nature have raised in popularity too. Lodgings like in Garut are most sought by tourists as it’s perfect for healing. Not only that, tourists are not only interested in the rooms but also the sceneries surrounding the lodging.

The concept of open space lodging is basically a variation for homes that use the concept of open space without partitions and room dividers like walls.
