4.5 Magnitude Earthquake in Sumedang, West Java: 548 Displaced, 1,382 Houses Damaged

On 1st January 2024, an aftershock measuring 4.5 magnitude struck Sumedang. Previously, on 31st January 2023, at 9:34 PM local time, an earthquake of 4.8 magnitude occurred.

“The epicentre is positioned at coordinates 6.82 South Latitude and 107.92 East Longitude, precisely on land, about 4 km north of Sumedang Regency, West Java, at a depth of 10 km,” stated Daryono, Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center (1/1/2024).

Within the period from 31st December 2023, to 4th January 2024, 10 earthquakes rattled Sumedang. According to the latest data from the Sumedang Government, 12 sub-districts were affected, displacing 548 people and destroying 1,382 houses due to the earthquake. Here are the details regarding the ten earthquake in Sumedang:

  • 31st December 2023: Magnitude 4.8, depth 7 km, occurred at 2:35 PM local time.
  • 31st December 2023: Magnitude 3.4, depth 6 km, occurred at 3:38 PM local time.
  • 31st December 2023: Magnitude 4.8, depth 5 km, occurred at 8:34 PM local time.
  • 31st December 2023: Magnitude 2.9, depth 7 km, occurred at 11:23 PM local time.
  • 1st January 2024: Magnitude 2.4, depth 5 km, occurred at 03:47 AM local time.
  • 1st January 2024: Magnitude 4.5, depth 10 km, occurred at 8:46 PM local time.
  • 2nd January 2024: Magnitude 2.7, depth 10 km, occurred at 2:35 PM local time.
  • 4th January 2024: Magnitude 3.1, depth 6 km, occurred at 07:15 AM local time.
  • 4th January 2024: Magnitude 5.6, depth 10 km, occurred at 07:43 AM local time.
  • 4th January 2024: Magnitude 3.5, depth 28 km, occurred at 1:54 PM local time.

The earthquake in Sumedang resulted in minor injuries for 9 individuals, leaving 1 person with serious injuries. Consequently, the Sumedang Regency Government has declared an emergency response period from 1st – 7th January 2024. The rehabilitation of affected residents’ houses is scheduled to commence on 8th January 2024.
