July 27, 2022 – Tectonic earthquake with 3,7 magnitude shakes South Kuta, Badung area on Monday (25/7).

According to the Head of the Centre for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Region III Denpasar Cahyo Nugroho, the earthquake happened around 5:09 PM WITA. Fortunately, there are no causalities or damage that happened when the earthquake happens.

Nugroho also explained that the epicentre of the earthquake happened in the ocean 7 kilometres northeast of South Kuta, Bali 11 kilometres deep in the ocean.

From the epicentre location and the depth of the hypocentre, Nugroho concluded that the earthquake is due to the horizontal fault activity on the seabed.

The earthquake was felt by the people staying in Denpasar, Kuta, Jimbaran, and Gianyar areas. From the resident’s report, the earthquake feels as if there are trucks passing by. While residents in Klungkung feel that light objects hanging on ceilings and walls begin to shake.

The results of tsunami modelling based on tectonic earthquakes showed that the earthquake doesn’t have any potential for a tsunami.

“The results from Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Council (BMKG) monitoring show that there won’t be any aftershock activity,” Nugroho said.

The public is advised to remain calm and not to be influenced by issues that can’t be proven as truths.

Other than that, the residents are advised to avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged caused by the earthquake.

“Make sure to check your house or residency can withstand earthquakes, or if there is no damage caused by the earthquake that might disturb the balance that keeps your house steady,” he said.

Two days prior, an earthquake happened in Tabanan, Bali with a magnitude of 3.0. It happened 15 kilometres southwest of Tabanan with 96 kilometres in depth.

According to the data done by BMKG, there are 130 earthquakes that happened from July 15 to July 21 2022 in Bali, NTB and NTT. But, most of the earthquakes that happened are small-scale ones that it wasn’t felt at all.
