During the G20 Indonesia 2022 agenda, there are a lot of things discussed to determine Indonesia’s future economy. One of the things that you should be aware of is the Bali Package that was developed by the Digital Economy Working Group (DEWG). The Bali Package was completed during the fourth assembly session in Nusa Dua, Bali. Here is some of the following information you need to be aware of:

What is Bali Package?

As an agreement between the delegates of 20 nations, The Bali Package is the result of DEWG G20’s four series of meetings. It will also symbolize the G20’s resolve to work together for an inclusive and sustainable integer transformation to achieve a robust recovery. According to Usman Kansong, Director General of Information and Public Communication at the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, the Bali Package has evolved into a ministerial declaration that will be considered in Bali and is expected to be the G20 summit’s centrepiece.

There are 4 sessions altogether with the first one took place in March in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. The third one was in Labuan Bajo in July after the second one in Yogyakarta in May

What is DEWG?

A DEWG meeting was held for the first time this year during the G20 Indonesia 2022 Presidency. It is a follow-up to the Digital Economy Task Force (DETF) report from the August 2021 Italian G20 Presidency. Three main agendas—post-Covid-19 Recovery and Connectivity, Digital Skills and Digital Literacy, and Cross-Border Data Flow and Data Free-Flow with Trust—were covered in this G20 DEWG.

Who plays an important part in this event?

Numerous organizations, in addition to the G20 members, are present and participate in the input and decision-making. They include the Islamic Development Bank (ISDB), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and the Organization for Economic Cooperation (OECD). Additionally, universities like Universitas Gajah Mada, Universitas Indonesia, and Universitas Padjajaran have academic representatives who carry the title of knowledge partner.

What is the purpose of The Bali Package?

All participants at this DEWG session discussed a range of topics related to the digital economy, including data concerns and digital connectivity. It will create more chances for the G20 nations and the rest of the world to work together in order to advance shared digitalization in a sustainable way.

How is it going to be implemented?

The G20 Digital Economy Ministers Meeting (DEMM), which takes place on September 1, 2022, will be where the draft declaration will be discussed once more before being finalized by the G20 Digital Sector Ministers. Additionally, President Joko Widodo wants the Bali Package to include specific actions that may be taken immediately, like managing connections. Millions of people worldwide still lack access to the internet today. Therefore, coordinated and concrete efforts should be taken to solve this issue.
