Though crime against foreigners is usually limited to petty theft. But taxi scams and ATM fraud are also rampant, especially in urban centres.

Paying special attention to small things regarding safety and a few general things in mind can help you get used to living in Indonesia.

Be aware of local culture and gender roles

You better avoid trusting people too quickly and be careful about giving out personal details such as your home address and phone number. When you’re out for a walk try to minimize eye contact when possible. Dressing modestly, or wearing a hat and sunglasses might help and won’t misconstrue or make you feel vulnerable. Don’t use your mobile phone while walking on unfamiliar or dark streets. Using your phone discreetly will help and don’t make you look new to a country.

Pay extra attention when you are home

Lock your home securely, and make sure you choose the right residential area with the best security provided or a neighbourhood where community interaction and participation are very high. Ensure that you do as thorough a background check when you are hiring household staff. And don’t leave any valuables belonging or your car keys in your car.

Learning the language won’t hurt

Being able to speak Bahasa Indonesia will help you in case of any emergencies or accidents. This will make it easier for you to ask for help or get directions from the police.

Choose your transport carefully

Many countries in Asia have women-only sections in public transport systems such as trains. In Indonesia, you can find this women-only section on KRL or TransJakarta. If you prefer to ride by taxi, make sure you choose a licensed taxi.
