Disaster hits yet again in Jakarta. The Indonesian capital city of Jakarta experienced severe weather and heavy rain, which caused flooding that affected over 100 districts and some areas of Tangerang and Bekasi, two of Jakarta’s satellite cities. According to BMKG, it might worsen due to unpredictable weather.

104 neighbourhood units (RTs) in the capital of Jakarta were reported to be flooded as of Monday, February 27, afternoon, up from 48 that morning, according to the Jakarta Disaster Protection Agency (BPBD), which also warned that additional rain was likely to fall in the ensuing days. Jakarta floods water depths varied from 35 to 1 meter in a few East Jakarta areas.

There were 57 flooded areas in East Jakarta, followed by 28 in West Jakarta and 19 in South Jakarta. As of Monday evening, East Jakarta was the area most severely affected by the Jakarta floods of the Ciliwung River, one of the city’s most polluted waterways and a significant contributor to Jakarta’s frequent flooding.

Isnawa Adji, the director of the Jakarta BPBD, stated in a written statement in regard to the current disaster of flooding on Thursday, March 2, “Moderate to high-intensity rain shower most of Jakarta on Wednesday and Thursday, creating flooding in several areas.

Isnawa claimed heavy rains as the cause of the flooding. On March 1, at 18:00 local time, Tegal Alur experienced inundation. Floodwater with a 30-centimeter depth flooded four residential neighborhoods.

The three flooded roadways in Tegal Alur, Kalideres, are as follows:

  • Jalan Kamal Raya, which is 20 centimeters high
  • Jalan Prepedan Raya, which is 30 centimeters high
  • Jalan Menceng Raya is 30 centimeters tall and in front of SDN 02 Tegal Alur.

Isnawa stressed that his party had sent people to monitor city flooding. Additionally, BPBD Jakarta worked with districts and associated organizations to focus on tackling this flooding issue. The goal is for the flooding to subside quickly, he explained.

Heavy rains on Sunday and Monday last week in Bekasi, one of Jakarta’s satellite cities, led to floods in 9 districts, with a residential area in Jatiasih suffering the most. As of Monday, February 27, 11 regions in the nearby Bekasi regency were flooded, according to several media outlets, following the same fate of Jakarta floods in the capital.

Around two dozen homes in Tangerang regency experienced flooding after Ranca Gelam Lake and the Cirarab River flooded due to the sudden rains. Since the floods make it extremely difficult to traverse the city, some motorbikes attempted but failed to drive along a section of flooding road linking Tangerang city to West Jakarta.

West Jakarta, East Jakarta, Tangerang, and Bekasi will likely experience mild rain this week. At the same time, Bogor is expected to experience moderate rain, according to statistics from the Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG)
