Bali to Ban E-Bikes On Sanur Beach Pedestrian Area

Starting from the 1st of April, 2023, the Denpasar City Government in Bali will outlaw e-bikes in the Sanur Beach walking area and relocate the permitted area to Danau Tamblingan Street. Head of the Denpasar City Tourism Office Dezire Mulyani said at a Saturday press briefing regarding the prohibition rule of using e-bikes that “Sanur Beach is a special recreational destination for the community, both local and foreign tourists.”

According to her, the prohibition is in place to preserve Sanur’s comfort and safety as Denpasar City’s most famous tourist destination. She claimed that Mayoral Regulation No. 51/2022 serves as a directive for the local populace, tourists, MSMEs, and all other players in the Sanur Beach area. E-bike and e-motorbike hire service providers were informed of the prohibition during the training session by officials of the Denpasar city government and local communities.

The Intaran and Sanur traditional villages, pecalang (traditional security guards), the city’s public order security organisation (Satpol PP), and the tourism office joined the information gatherings. E-bikes won’t be permitted to be run in the beach pedestrian area starting on the 1st of April. Dedicated pedestrians and classic bikes will exist, according to Mulyani.

The use of electric motorbikes will be restricted to Danau Tamblingan Street and the area within, which is still a part of the Sanur tourist area. According to AA Alit Kencana, the chief of Intaran Village, prohibition is necessary to maintain the neighbourhood’s safety, comfort, and tourist-friendliness.

Kencana claimed many visitors had been irritated by e-bikes in the Sanur Beach area, particularly those in nearby accommodations.

Some pedestrians have also voiced complaints about e-bike users who travel too fast.

Despite visitors’ desire to unwind and take in the Sanur area, e-bike riders honk at them in this tourist destination. He said some people expressed dissatisfaction with the pace, adding that e-bike mishaps occasionally happened.

“Let’s sensibly resolve this as a group. Keep Sanur’s reputation intact,” he advised.
