The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) stated that four residents’ houses in West Java and East Java were damaged by the 6.6 magnitude earthquake on the north coast of Tuban, East Java. The Tuban earthquake occurred on Friday 14th of April, 2023, at around 16.55 WIB. The two houses in West Java damaged by the earthquake were spread over two locations. The heavily damaged ones were located in Banjar Village, Banjar District, and the slightly damaged ones were in Cikembar Village, Cikembar District, Sukabumi Regency.

“While in East Java Province, two houses were also affected by the earthquake, suffered moderate damage, one in Darsono Village, Arjasa District, Jember Regency and another in Panggul Village, Panggul District, Trenggalek Regency,” said Plt. Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, in his statement, Saturday, 15th of April, 2023.

Muhari explained that Banjar City, West Java residents also felt the earthquake for 3 to 5 seconds. In addition, people in Jember Regency, Surabaya City, East Java, also felt an earthquake with the same duration. Even so, the BPBD reported no panic in the community when the earthquake occurred.

Meanwhile, in some other areas, such as Tuban, Rembang and Blora districts, the BPBD is still conducting further monitoring. BNPB reported no aftershocks after the incident.

In addition, Muhari explained that the Bali Provincial BPBD confirmed that one victim had died. The five-year-old victim, located in Marga Village, Tabanan Regency, Bali, died allegedly due to shock when the earthquake occurred.

Based on BMKG analysis, the phenomenon is a deep earthquake due to slab pull deformation activity on the Indo-Australian plate, which is subducted under the Java Sea. Subsequent research of the source mechanism shows that the earthquake has a downward movement.

Judging from the MMI parameter or modified Mercalli intensity, it had an impact and was felt by residents in Kuta with an MMI V scale. Meanwhile, the intensity in Karangkates, Trenggalek, Gianyar, Tulungagung, Nganjuk, Pacitan, Kediri, Tuban, Garut, and Mataram is felt on the IV MMI scale. In the Pelabuhan Ratu area, Labuan, Tabanan, the intensity of III MMI was identified.

The higher the level of the MMI scale, the potential impact can be higher. BMKG describes V MMI as vibrations almost all residents in the area feel. The BMKG parameter update stated that the earthquake had its centre 65 kilometres northwest of Tuban, East Java, at a depth of 643 km. Based on BMKG modelling, the earthquake was at sea and had no potential for a tsunami.
