Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto to Moscow on Wednesday, July 31, 2024. Putin said Russia and Indonesia have had long and friendly relationships for decades.

According to Putin, Prabowo is an old friend of Russia. Putin also said this year is the 75th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries.

“I know that you have very good relations with your Russian colleagues,” Putin said on Wednesday when assessing Prabowo’s performance as Indonesia’s Defence Minister, as reported by TASS.

Prabowo also expressed his support for Russia’s plan to open direct flights of Russian airlines to Bali and a consular office in Denpasar, Bali.

The Indonesian president-elect wanted to improve relations between Indonesia and the Russian Federation. Direct flights to Bali are considered to strengthen relations in the tourism sector.

“In the tourism sector, we have just approved Aeroflot (Russia’s largest airline) to fly directly to Bali, and we also welcome Russia’s plan to open a consulate general in Bali,” Prabowo told Putin, as monitored from KompasTV‘s YouTube broadcast.

Prabowo also proposed cooperation in various fields, including the tourism sector. He said Indonesia and Russia could collaborate in the nuclear energy sector with the help of Russia’s nuclear state-owned enterprise, Rosatom.

Prabowo is known to have organised an overseas safari visit after attending the opening of the Paris 2024 Olympics last weekend.

This visit, which included meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was part of his efforts to strengthen Indonesia’s international relations.
