When Online Shopping Gets Photogenic: A Foreigner’s Pose with His Package

Share:

Shipping items when you online shopping is a global practice. However, the custom of couriers in Indonesia taking photos of packages is a unique twist that may pique the interest of many foreigners.

As shown in a viral video on TikTok by @wawanputih0, the video depicts him receiving a package ordered online from major marketplaces in Indonesia, such as Tokopedia, Shopee, and Lazada.

“When you order a package from Tokopedia/Shopee/Lazada and the driver asks for proof of delivery,” he wrote in the video.

Instead of handing the package to be photographed, the foreigner poses like a photo model while holding it.

This funny video was flooded with hundreds of comments writing:

“How do you ask the courier to take your photo? I want it too,” wrote @je.moncherie.

“Instantly, the vibe becomes like a fashion magazine,” wrote another netizen from the @itsbaylah account.

The habit of couriers in Indonesia taking photos of packages sent is something you will feel when living in Indonesia and ordering goods online.

The purpose of taking these photos is to ensure the condition of the package at the time of collection and delivery of goods. This serves as a form of evidence in case your package encounters any issues.

If you, as an expat, don’t want to be photographed or present your face, a photo of your package and hands will suffice. Also, before taking photos, the courier must ask for your permission first.

Understanding the Law If Expedition Couriers Take Photos Without Permission

As reported by Hukumonline, there are rules governing the taking of these photos.

In the provisions of Article 1 number 1 of Law 19/2016, it is stated that electronic information is one or a set of electronic data, including but not limited to writings, sounds, images, maps, designs, photographs, electronic data interchange (EDI), electronic mail, telegram, telex, telecopy or the like, letters, signs, numbers, access codes, symbols, or perforations that have been processed which have meaning or can be understood by people who are able to understand them.

However, you need to understand that taking this photo is generally used as proof that you, as the package recipient, received the goods properly and correctly. This proof is later sent to the seller and proves that the package has been delivered and arrived at its destination.

Thus, we recommend that you ask the courier to take photos and vice versa. The courier can ask the package recipient for permission to take photos as proof of delivery so that there is no violation of the use of personal data.
