Indonesia Denies Apple’s $100 Million Investment to Lift the iPhone 16 Ban from the Market

The Government of the Republic of Indonesia, through the Ministry of Industry, rejected Apple’s investment proposal for 100 million US dollars or around IDR 1.59 trillion.

The Ministry of Industry assessed the investment proposal for the period 2024-2026 and found it “has not fulfilled the aspects of justice.”

“Through a technocratic assessment, the Ministry of Industry considers that the proposal submitted by Apple has not fulfilled the four aspects of justice,” wrote the Ministry of Industry in a written statement, as reported by Kompas.

The Government hopes Apple‘s next investment will be greater than US$100 million. However, because this investment was rejected, the iPhone 16 series is still officially prohibited from being sold in Indonesia.

Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita detailed four aspects of justice that Apple has not considered fulfilled through its latest investment offer.

Agus said Apple must fulfil four principles of justice if it wants to invest in Indonesia. First, Apple’s investment in Indonesia must be equal to that of other peer countries.

Second, Apple’s investment must also be equivalent to that of other electronics companies, such as Samsung, which is worth IDR 8 trillion, and Xiaomi, which is worth IDR 5 trillion.

Third, it is related to the creation of added value and state revenue from importation. Where, this calculation is not in accordance with what the Government expects.

Fourth, how much does the electronics company, in this case Apple, impact domestic employment?

Build a Factory

The Minister of Industry urged Apple to build a production facility or factory in Indonesia immediately based on the principle of reasonableness so that the company would not need to submit an investment scheme proposal every three years.

Despite the sales ban, the Indonesian Government still allows the iPhone 16 to be brought into Indonesia if it is not commercially traded.

The price of iPhones in Indonesia is expected to decrease after the Government, through the Ministry of Industry, rejected Apple’s investment proposal of US$100 million or around Rp 1.5 trillion.
