On 25 November 2023, during the day, a giant crocodile entered the Arut River area in Mendawai Seberang Village, Pangkalan Bun, Central Kalimantan, and fatally attacked a 10-year-old kid.  Nabil, the kid, had been swimming in the Arut River area with his friends when they noticed the rapid approach of the crocodile. As it swiftly swam towards the river’s edge, Nabil, positioned farthest from the bank, became ensnared in the giant crocodile mouth and was pulled towards the river’s center.

Nabil’s friends urgently called out for help from local residents as Nabil began disappearing from the water’s surface. At 11:30 AM local time, the family promptly reached out to the SAR team and initiated the search for the victim. By 2:00 PM local time, emotional residents, deeply affected by the giant crocodile, successfully captured and dissected the 5-meter-long, over 100 kg crocodile. The police, unable to pacify the residents’ emotions, remained focused on the ongoing victim search.

A viral video shared on Twitter by the @jujukyng account depicts the tragic moments of Nabil’s fatal encounter with the giant crocodile in the Arut River. This widely-viewed video, watched by over 1.3 million people, documents the entire search for the victim, including footage of the residents dealing with the crocodile.

Indonesian netizens responded with a range of emotions to this tragic news. Numerous expressed heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family, while others voiced their deep concern over the harrowing experience faced by a 10-year-old child.

Following 10 hours of searching, they located Nabil’s body not far from where he vanished in the river. Upon discovery, Nabil’s body bore extensive lacerations caused by the giant crocodile teeth.
