After assaulting two elderly women at an apartment in North Jakarta, Kelapa Gading area, the police detained a Nigerian national, Augustus Nwambara (32). One of the victims was also stabbed by the perpetrator. The Nigerian man had been furious for unexplained reasons before attacking the victims.
Police Grand Commissioner Adjutant Iverson Manossoh, the head of the North Jakarta Metro Police’s Criminal Investigation Unit, stated that the two senior citizens were harassed on Friday, the 5th of May 2023, at around 6.43 p.m.
According to Manossoh, the suspect had been hiding at the apartment on the 20th floor before the incident occurred. Since they lived in that apartment, the victims were also there before the incident.
The first victim with the initial “N” (55) reported hearing a noise that she believed to be someone kicking a door close to the apartment where she was staying that evening. It was then discovered that a Nigerian man acted violently at the crime scene. The perpetrator reportedly chased the victim without a clear reason, which led to an act of violence.
“At first, there was an elderly woman with the initial “N” (55) who heard a commotion outside her 20th-floor residential unit. Then “N” came outside of her house and saw Nwambara, who was enraged. When the perpetrator saw “N”, he immediately approached and beat her,” explained Manossoh on Saturday, the 6th of May, 2023.
Then, a senior citizen with the initials “RD” (58) saw what had happened. She tried to assist N, but the suspect also harassed her. Using a sharp object stolen from RD’s unit, Nwambara stabbed RD in the back and numerous other places.
On Friday 5th of May, Augustus Nwambara was detained by the police, and on Saturday, the 6th of May, he was named a suspect in the case. Meanwhile, North Jakarta Metro Police Chief Commissioner Gidion Arif Setyawan confirmed that the suspect’s test results for alcohol and drug consumption were negative.
On Monday, the 8th of May 2023, Setyawan stated, “The results of the urine tests and alcohol were negative, then narcotics were also negative.”
In light of the examination’s findings, Setyawan said, his team needed to consult forensic psychologists to determine the cause of Nwambara’s actions.
The offender has now been detained and is being investigated as a suspect. He is being held at the North Jakarta Metro Police Headquarters Detention Center after being accused of violating Article 351 of the Criminal Code regarding maltreatment. The perpetrator might spend up to five years in jail if the abuse causes significant injuries.
The police will also work along with the Class I Immigration Office in North Jakarta to look into the Nigerian man’s background before his alleged act of persecution for the investigation.
