An Australian Citizen Arrested for Smuggling Drugs

30th September 2022 –  The Bali Provincial National Narcotics Agency arrested Australian citizen Graham Welton Jeffrey Huynh (52). He left Perth over a year ago to subsequently live in Bali as a diving instructor. He was arrested by the police for smuggling heroin inside his own rectum. He wrapped the narcotics with a condom and insert it into his private area. In detail, he managed to pack 8,09 heroin and 0,34 methamphetamine.

He was arrested at the international arrival terminal of Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport, on 6 September 2022 in the morning. The man had just arrived on a flight from Vietnam. The customs officer suspected the foreigner because he was staggering and refused to be examined by the officer. Thus, the officers decided to phone the Bali Provincial National Narcotics Agency. From the results of an x-ray examination, there was a suspicious object in his rectum. After being moved and examined in the laboratory, the object was positive for the substances.

He has violated article 113 paragraph 2 and or article 112 paragraph 2 of Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics. Indonesia is one of the countries that has some of the toughest drug laws in the world, including the death penalty for traffickers. However, the death penalty is often reduced and replaced by a longer prison sentence. Indonesia has executed foreign nationals in 2019, including two Australian masterminds of the Bali Nine heroin gang who were shot in 2015.

In August itself, it is reported that within six months, Bali police arrested 16 foreign nationals involved in drug cases. In addition to arresting 16 foreigners, Bali police also successfully secured various pieces of evidence in the form of drugs. Bali Deputy Police Chief Brigadier General I Ketut Suardana said Bali police seized 39 kilograms of drugs worth IDR 56 billion between January and June 2022. Ketut Suardana said data showed that drug trafficking is very high in Bali.
