The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 Richter scale hits South Kuta, Badung Regency, Bali, on Monday, 7th of August 2023, in the early hours of Western Indonesian time. BMKG stated that the earthquake has no potential for a tsunami so far.
Based on the BMKG report, the earthquake occurred at 2.40 a.m. WIB. The epicentrum or point on the surface of the earth for the earthquake was 170 km southwest of South Kuta, Bali. While the hypocentre or epicentre below the Earth’s surface is at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The main earthquake measured magnitude 5.1 Richter scale, followed by aftershocks with decreasing magnitude, namely magnitude 4.7 and magnitude 4.4 Richter scale, respectively. Aftershocks measuring M 4.7 occurred at 02.46 a.m. WIB at the same point and depth. Then an aftershock measuring M 4.4 occurred at 03.02 a.m. WIB.
So far, it is unknown whether there was any damage due to this earthquake. This includes the victims who were affected and the shocks felt by residents.
A few hours earlier, an earthquake measuring 4.6 magnitude struck the Panjang Island area, West Nusa Tenggara. The earthquake had a hypocentre at a depth of 11 kilometres, and the epicentre was 18 kilometres northwest of Pulau Panjang. BMKG recorded this earthquake at 01.14 a.m WIB. The coordinates of this earthquake are 8.32 south latitude and 116.74 east longitude.
Up to the time when this news was reported, it was not yet known whether there was any damage or casualties due to this earthquake. The authorities have also not said anything related to the affected victims. Only the BMKG has reported that the earthquake in Lombok was felt on a scale of MMI III in East Lombok and MMI II-III in North Lombok.
