About Art Jakarta

Art Jakarta has a fascinating history dates back to its inception in 2009. Over the years, the art fair has grown in scale and popularity, showcasing the best Indonesian and Southeast Asian art. The fair serves as a platform for local and international artists to present their works and connect with collectors and art enthusiasts.

This year, the international contemporary art event is scheduled for 17–19 November 2023 at the JIEXPO Kemayoran in Central Jakarta as its new venue. With each edition, Art Jakarta continues to push boundaries and elevate the art scene in Jakarta and beyond.

Highlights of Art Jakarta 2023

As one of Southeast Asia’s most important art events, Art Jakarta 2023 aims to showcase the best Indonesian and Southeast Asian art. This edition will feature special exhibitions, curated showcases, and collaborations with leading museums and galleries.

One of the highlights of Art Jakarta 2023 will be the bigger venue: Exhibitor, Collaboration, and more excitement. It includes more exhibitor compared to last year, with a total of 68 galleries from Indonesia (40) and abroad (28), which will present the latest works of their artists. International galleries: Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, South Korea, China, Japan, Russia, and Australia

Furthermore, a bigger venue, JIEXPO Kemayoran, allows Art Jakarta to collaborate with more partners. The three main partners of Art Jakarta 2023 are Julius Baer, a leading institution in the global wealth management sector with a long tradition of patronage of the arts; UOB Indonesia, a regional banking institution as well as a consistent supporter of fine arts and its commitments in Southeast Asia; and Bibit, a winning digital investment app awards that encourage financial literacy throughout Indonesia. These Three Partners collaborate with talented artists, including presenting award-winning works and commissioned works that will make their debut.

Art Jakarta 2023 Edition

The art scene in Jakarta is set to come alive in 2023 with the highly anticipated Art Jakarta event. Known as the premier art fair in Asia, Art Jakarta showcases the best of contemporary art from both local and international artists. This edition promises to be even bigger and better, with a lineup of renowned galleries and exciting new talents.

According to Tom Tandio as the Fair Director of Art Jakarta 2023, he mentioned “It’s great that this year Art Jakarta can perform at the new venue, JIEXPO Kemayoran. We sowed new hope as we moved to this larger location, which allowed us to engage with more collaborations and deliver larger installations. We are especially proud to receive great support from a collection of Partners aligned with us. All presenting projects or presentations of the results of collaboration with artists in their respective places in one integrated area. We believe this year’s edition will exceed our expectations for visitors. Apart from that, collectors from abroad will also be present in larger numbers considering that these months are the fourth quarter, a more favourable season rather than our previous schedule in the summer months.”

Art Jakarta 2023 is not only hoped to be a platform for artists and galleries to present their work, but it also serves as a meeting point for art enthusiasts and collectors. With its focus on Southeast Asian art, this edition of Art Jakarta will enable visitors to gain deeper insights into the region’s rich art scene and culture.

Gallery

One of the highlights of Art Jakarta 2023 is the main segment that welcomes the exhibitor, which consists of 40 art galleries from Indonesia and 28 galleries from around the world. Its impressive lineup of artists and their exceptional artworks. From paintings to sculptures, visitors can expect to be captivated by a wide range of mediums and styles.

Spot

A platform for a special presentation depicted in art installation made special for Art Jakarta week. For this reason, Spot in Art Jakarta 2023 will install nine works of art that have been curated to be exhibited in the public areas of this art fair, including the work of Jose Santos (Philippines), which is an act of construction-reconstruction personnel, the arrangement of various objects to resurrect and reframe them as a coded language for past lives; and Nipan Oranniwesna (Thailand), which highlights the concept of boundaries and the intersection between the two sides of the border in Neither Body nor Soul (2018). These two works appear in Indonesia for the first time.

PLAY by UOB Indonesia

It is specially designed to provide a play area for children and hone their creativity, sensitivity and imagination through various activities. Presented by UOB Indonesia, this year’s PLAY was commissioned by Farhan Siki, winner of UOB Indonesia Painting of the Year 2022, to create an interactive space, The dynamic “Plant a Tree, Plant a Life”, where children can get to know fine art by playing around and imagining.

Scene

A special segment for artist collectives and non-profits to raise funds in their efforts. Art Jakarta supports initiatives that require creative formats in this campaign, especially from those outside the Jakarta area, to help strengthen the community spirit in the fine arts arena.

AJ Talk

A platform for experts, observers, artists, collectors and curators to chat and share experiences and knowledge with visitors. With ranks of trusted names and interesting figures in the fine arts scene, This segment is an inseparable part of Art Jakarta. This year, AJ Talk became an event for, among other things, the launch of the book Vice Versa by photographer Indra Leonardi and illuminations by critic Carla Bianpoen, discussion of UOB’s winning works Painting of the Year from several countries, as well as discussions about creativity with Evan Wijaya (graphic designer) and Samantha K. Jackson (Percolate Galactic).
