Bali Government Faces Increasing Crime Index in 2024

Share:

The crime index in Bali for 2024 is showing signs of an increase, aligning with a surge in crime cases involving both the local population and tourists. As the second month of 2024 unfolds, Bali is grappling with various issues, including incidents of assault and shootings.

A notable incident within the local community was the beating and stabbing of a 23-year-old man identified as APK in Mengwi, Badung, on 16th January 2024. This was followed by a shooting incident involving Turkish, a resident of Villa Palm House Mengwi, on 23rd January 2024, causing significant concern in the local and foreign communities.

The shooting incident involved a group of four Mexican gangsters. Dewa Made Indra, the Regional Secretary of Bali Province, emphasizes that it is premature to conclude the overall crime index in Bali is experiencing a rise.

“We should refrain from hastily reaching conclusions. Just because a large number of residents come, and there is a corresponding increase in crime, it doesn’t mean we can immediately attribute it to the immigrant population. Methodologically, it doesn’t work that way,” remarked Dewa Indra during an encounter at the Art Center on Thursday, 1st February 2024, as quoted from Tribun Bali.

According to Bali Police data from 2023, there were 261 reported criminal cases throughout the year, marking a 19% increase compared to 2022, which saw only 219 recorded cases. However, in 2023, the Bali Police achieved a case resolution rate of 74.71%, equivalent to resolving 195 criminal cases.

In addition, drug possession cases were predominant in 2023, totalling 816 cases as recorded by the Bali Police. This represents an increase compared to 2022, with 725 cases. Undeniably, crime incidents in Bali involve various groups, including foreign tourists, residents, and individuals who recently moved to Bali.

Another distressing incident that deeply impacted Bali’s tourism image occurred on 7th August 2023, when an online taxi driver raped a tourist from Brazil. This tragic event significantly affected Bali’s reputation as a flourishing tourist destination. The perpetrator, identified as WD, was apprehended while hiding in Pasuruan, East Java (8/8/2023).

While official data from Bali police regarding the projected crime index for 2024 has not been released yet, many stakeholders in the tourism industry and the local Balinese community express their hope for a decrease in crime rates to safeguard Bali’s tourism reputation.
