Foreigner Caught Littering in Front of Bali Villa and Ordered to Sweep the Grounds as Punishment

The controversial behaviour of foreigners in Bali has once again come under scrutiny, with a recent incident involving a foreign national who was filmed littering in front of a villa in the Munggu area, located in the Mengwi District of Badung, Bali.

This troubling event has sparked outrage among local residents, who promptly reported the foreigner’s actions to the village authorities.

The incident, which has since gone viral on social media, shows a foreign man throwing garbage into cardboard containers and leaving it scattered in the courtyard of the villa opposite his residence. According to the caption accompanying the viral video, this is not the first time such an act has taken place.

The uploader of the video claims that the foreigner had previously disposed of four bags of rubbish in front of a local resident’s house.

The situation escalated when residents, frustrated by the foreigner’s behaviour, decided to confront him.

Upon checking local CCTV footage, it was confirmed that the foreign national was indeed the one responsible for placing the garbage in front of the villa. In retaliation, he allegedly scattered the garbage in front of the residents’ houses, as seen in the footage shared online.

The video, which circulated widely on social media on the afternoon of Friday, April 25, 2025, attracted considerable attention. I Ketut Darta, the Perbekel (Village Head) of Munggu, confirmed that the incident had occurred in his village.

He noted that the video was deliberately shared by local residents, who were keen to bring attention to the foreigner’s actions.

“There is news from residents, he said this foreigner wanted his residence to be clean. He said he didn’t subscribe to the garbage man. We will confirm the clarity later,” said Darta, as reported by Detiknews.

However, Darta reassured the public that the matter was being addressed, stating that the issue had been resolved, but further clarification would be sought from all parties involved – including the foreigner and the residents – to ensure that the situation was fully understood.

Darta also mentioned that he was unsure of how long the foreigner had been residing in the villa. Based on information provided by residents, the foreign national lived in the same villa area, with his residence being situated directly across from where the garbage was discarded.

According to reports from the community, the foreigner had expressed dissatisfaction with the cleanliness of the area, allegedly claiming that he had not subscribed to a waste collection service. The village head indicated that further clarification on this point would be sought in the coming days.

In response to the incident, the foreigner has reportedly offered an apology to the local residents for his behaviour. As part of the resolution, village authorities have imposed a form of community service as punishment.

The foreigner has been instructed to personally sweep the villa grounds and pick up the trash that he had carelessly scattered. This act of restitution aims to emphasise the importance of respecting local customs and maintaining the cleanliness of the community.

This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between locals and foreigners in Bali, a popular tourist destination that continues to attract visitors from all over the world.

While many foreigners come to enjoy the beauty and culture of Bali, their behaviour sometimes clashes with the values and expectations of the local population.

The authorities have stressed the need for mutual respect and understanding, and such incidents serve as a reminder of the importance of responsible behaviour, particularly when living in or visiting a foreign country.
