Bali Airport, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, will reduce operating hours for all flights from November 12 – 18, 2022 to increase safety and make room for planes carrying world leaders and other VVIP guests during the upcoming G20 Summit.

At least 18 heads of country and authorities from UK’s newly-elected Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to US President Joe Biden have shown attendance at the Summit on the 15 and 16 of November 2022.

Before the two-day summit, world business leaders, including the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, will converge on the resort island for the so-called B20 summit.

Commercial airliners will be banned from staying overnight at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport from the 12th, said Handy Heryudhitiawan, the airport’s general manager.

From 14 November, the airport will operate between 00:00 and 02:00 AM local time (GMT+8 hours) and between 01:00 PM and 09:00 PM.

On the 17th, when world leaders are scheduled to leave the resort island, flights are open from 12:00 PM – 07:00 PM.

“This coordination needs to be done to ensure the safe and smooth operation of flights carrying heads of state, VVIP guests and military personnel during the G20 summit,” Handy said.

He added that government and charter or commercial aircraft carrying world leaders and their G20 delegation would be given priority due to limited operational hours.

Director General of Civil Aviation Nur Isnin Istiartno said that some commercial flights to Bali will continue to fly to nearby airports in cities such as Lombok, Surabaya, and Makassar during limited hours of operation.
