President Joko Widodo inaugurated the construction of the 24.5 km east-west Phase 1 of the Jakarta MRT from Medan Satria to Tomang on Wednesday, September 11, 2024.
PT MRT Jakarta Director Tuhiyat reports that the construction of the MRT line from Medan Satria (Bekasi) to Tomang (West Jakarta) is advancing well and is expected to reach completion by 2031, representing a noteworthy achievement in Jakarta’s infrastructure development.
“We will immediately start the tender process, which is planned to be carried out next year (2025) with the target of completing the construction project in 2031,” Tuhiyat said in a press release to the media.
The line from Bekasi to West Jakarta consists of 21 stations. The stations are: Medan Satria, Ujung Menteng, Pulo Gebang, Cakung Barat, Penggilingan, Pulogadung and Perintis.

In his remarks, President Jokowi recalled the success of the first phase of MRT construction, which has been operating since March 2019. The phase is known to connect Lebak Bulus to the Hotel Indonesia (HI) Roundabout.
“The north-south phase 1 has changed the face of Jakarta, has changed the face of Jakarta transportation, and also our country Indonesia,” the President said.
The construction of phase 2A of the North-South MRT connecting Bundaran, HI, to the City is ongoing. However, the government is determined to expand the MRT network in Jakarta to make it more integrated. “We want to expand, widen the range of development,” said the President.
The MRT construction is funded by a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), as the Japanese government established the Japan International Cooperation Agency to assist development in developing countries.
“The construction is funded by a JICA loan through co-financing with ADB, with the Ministry of Transportation as the Assisting Agency, and the Jakarta Provincial Government as the Implementing Agency and BTA MRT Jakarta as the Sub-Implementing Agency,” Heru Budi Hartono said as reported by Antara.
In May 2024, the Government of Indonesia and Japan signed an Official Development Assistance (ODA) Soft Loan Agreement document worth 140.699 million Yen or equivalent to around Rp14.5 trillion of the total project value of around Rp45 trillion.
This project received support from the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and co-financing from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) with a replication funding scheme of the North-South Line MRT Phase 1 and 2A.
