Earthquake in Karangasem Bali Shook The Whole Island

An earthquake with a magnitude (M) of 5.0 rocked the Karangasem area of Bali. The earthquake was at a depth of 10 km. The cause of the earthquake in Bali on Tuesday (13/12/2022) evening was said to be due to the activity of the Flores Rising Fault, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

This was conveyed by Daryono, Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, via Twitter.

Causes and Damages

“Taking into account the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a type of shallow earthquake, due to the activity of the Flores Rising Fault,” he said.

As of 06.30 PM, the BMKG recorded a total of 21 aftershocks.

“The modeling results show that this earthquake has no potential for a tsunami,” stated Daryono.

Previously it was reported, on Tuesday there were several earthquakes in Karangasem, Bali since the evening around 05.30 PM.

Daryono said that so far 5 houses have been reported damaged, 4 of them in Batu Ringgit Kelod Hamlet, Batu Ringgit Village, the remaining 1 in Pagubugan Hamlet, Manggis Village.

Not only that, the Balimed Karangasem Hospital also suffered damage. However, overall there have been no reports of casualties.

“The Karangasem earthquake had an impact and was felt in Karangasem (MMI III-IV intensity scale), in Mataram, North Lombok, Central Lombok and West Lombok (MMI III intensity scale), then the Tabanan, Kuta, Buleleng, East Lombok areas (intensity scale III) II MMI),” explained Daryono.

The earthquake was reported at 04.56 PM on Tuesday. The coordinates of the earthquake were at 8.24 South Latitude and 115.60 East Longitude.

There Were Aftershocks at 5 PM

BMKG reported a M 4.6 aftershock occurred at 05.00 PM. The earthquake coordinates were at 8.24 South Latitude and 115.57 East Longitude, 13 km northeast of Karangasem, Bali. Earthquake depth of 10 km

“In the first few minutes after the earthquake, the parameters of the earthquake may change and may not be accurate, unless it has been re-analyzed by a seismologist,” wrote the BMKG.
