There was another football supporters riot in Indonesia during the Gresik United vs Deltras FC match in Liga 2 2023/2024 (19/11/2023) at Joko Samudro Gesik Stadium, East Java. Following the match, Gresik United supporters, upset by their team’s loss as the host, sought to convey their grievances to the team management. The match ended with a 1-2 score, leaving many disappointed fans who had attended the live event.

The demonstration escalated into chaos as the audience began hurling objects towards the stadium, escalating the tension. Subsequently, the police attempted to intervene and quell the increasingly unruly football supporters who were damaging the stadium facilities.

In response, the police used tear gas, prompting the fans to flee the stadium immediately. This unfortunate incident resulted in 17 injured supporters and affected 11 police officers on duty.

Dian Felani, the Manager of Deltras FC Club, mentioned that the football supporters didn’t direct their frustration toward the opposing side. Instead, they want to complain that Gresik FC team management was seen as unprepared and not at their best during yesterday’s match.

Post-match, the situation outside the stadium turned highly chaotic, leading to the Deltras FC team being stranded at the stadium for several hours. When the situation improved, the players hurried onto the bus and headed back home to Sidoarjo.

As of 21 November 2023, seven football supporters are undergoing treatment due to respiratory issues caused by police tear gas. Controversy has erupted around this incident, with many condemning the police’s decision to use tear gas to scatter the crowd.

Reflecting on the tragic Kanjuruhan incident in 2022, deploying tear gas to disperse football supporters is highly perilous. Rather than calming the situation, its use could exacerbate matters and hold the potential for a catastrophic loss of life.
