The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) has revealed that foreign tourists spent an average of IDR 22.86 million during their visits to Indonesia in 2024.
Acting Head of BPS, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, shared this data during a press conference held at the BPS Office in Jakarta on Monday, February 3, 2025.
“On average, throughout 2024, foreign tourists spent around US$1,391 (Rp 22.86 million) while in Indonesia,” Amalia stated, as reported by Tempo.
BPS highlighted that the majority of foreign tourists’ expenditures were allocated toward essential living needs, such as accommodation and food. Accommodation accounted for the largest share of spending at 37.89%, followed by food and beverages at 19.60%. Additionally, shopping and souvenirs made up 11.31% of their expenses.
During the fourth quarter of 2024, foreign tourists spent slightly less on average compared to the annual figure. The average expenditure per tourist was USD 1,287 (IDR 21.16 million) during this period. On average, tourists spent about 10.39 nights in Indonesia during their visit.
Malaysian Tourists Dominate Arrivals, Swiss Tourists Spending the Most
Malaysia emerged as the leading country of origin for foreign tourists visiting Indonesia in 2024, contributing 2.278 million arrivals. This was followed by Australia with 1.67 million visits and Singapore with 1.408 million visits. However, Malaysian tourists had a lower average expenditure, spending around USD 693 (IDR 11.39 million) per trip.
On the other hand, tourists from Switzerland were the biggest spenders, averaging USD 2,194 (IDR 36.07 million) per visit. Visitors from the United States followed closely, spending USD 2,182 (IDR 35.87 million), while Austrian tourists averaged USD 2,175 (IDR 35.75 million).
December 2024 saw a significant increase in foreign tourist arrivals, with 1,244,372 visitors. This represented a 13.95% rise compared to November 2024 and an 8.72% increase year-over-year. Malaysian tourists were the largest group in December, followed by visitors from Singapore and Australia. Most Malaysian tourists entered Indonesia through Batam, while Australian tourists predominantly arrived via Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali.
During December, the average length of stay for foreign tourists was around 6.98 nights, slightly below the quarterly average.
A Record-Breaking Year for Tourism
In total, Indonesia welcomed 13,902,420 foreign tourist arrivals in 2024. This marked a 19.05% increase compared to 2023 and represented the highest figure in the last five years, although it remained lower than the pre-pandemic peak of 16.1 million arrivals in 2019.
“Cumulatively throughout 2024, total foreign tourist visits reached 13,902,420, an increase of 19.05 % compared to 2023. This achievement is the highest in the last five years since 2020,” Amalia stated during the press conference.
The data underscores Indonesia’s growing appeal as a global tourist destination and highlights the importance of tourism in boosting the national economy. With its diverse cultural offerings and natural beauty, Indonesia continues to attract visitors from all over the world.
