Indonesia to Host 2036 Olympic Games in The New Capital

Indonesia has officially declared its readiness to host the 2036 Olympic Games in the new capital city, Nusantara, North Penajam Paser Regency, East Kalimantan. This statement was delivered directly by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, at the G20 Summit.

“On this occasion, I convey Indonesia’s willingness and readiness to host the 2036 Olympics in the Indonesian capital (Nusantara),” said Jokowi, Wednesday, November 16, 2022.

Jokowi and The G20 Leaders Emphasized The Importance of Sport

Jokowi said that as Chair of the G20 Summit, he and the G20 leaders emphasized the importance of sport. In addition to health, sport also has an important role in uniting the world.

He believes the success of the next Olympic and Paralympic Games will mark the importance of neutrality in international sporting events.The next Olympic and Paralympic Games are:

  • Paris Olympics in 2024
  • Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics in 2026
  • Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 
  • Brisbane Olympics in 2032

The IOC Welcomes Indonesia’s Desire to Host The 2036 Olympic Games

The IOC (International Olympic Committee) also warmly welcomes Indonesia’s desire to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games at Nusantara.

“Seeing the presentation of the Nusantara project and the progress that has been made, I am very impressed with President Joko Widodo’s vision to build a city that has a sustainable model of life, with a special emphasis on health and sports,” said Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), in a KOI (Indonesian Olympic Committee) release.

For Indonesia’s seriousness, the IOC Future Host Commission, Erick Thohir and Chairman of the Indonesian Olympic Committee (NOC Indonesia), Raja Sapta Oktohari, will then establish communication with IOC Members in Indonesia.

Nusantara To Host 2036 Olympic Games

Erick thanked the IOC for its support for Indonesia’s readiness to host the 2036 Olympics.

“Following the direction of the President, as an IOC member, I will bridge the support of IOC President Thomas Bach and coordinate not only the IOC, but also the Indonesian NOC Mempora Zainuddin, led by Raja Sapta Oktohari, to maximize my support by preparing to host the Olympic Games in the new capital Nusantara,” said Erick.

Meanwhile, the General Chair of the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI), Raja Sapta Oktohari, explained that KOI together with IOC Member, Erick Thohir, and also the Minister of Youth and Sports, Zainudin Amali, will work together to realize IKN as the host of the Olympics.

Amali, as the Minister of Youth and Sports said that Indonesia is very serious about hosting the 2036 Olympic Games. Hosting the Olympics can provide intangible benefits.

“It’s not just us looking for profit, but there is more value than the Olympics, the impact will be tremendous on our sport. Indonesia has DBON (National Sports Grand Design), where on the 100th Indonesian Independence Day we can be in the top five in the world,” said Amali.

Besides Indonesia, there are already several other countries that wish to host the 2036 Olympics, including Egypt, Britain, Qatar, and Turkey.
