Indonesian Driving License Valid Across ASEAN from June 1, 2025

Those with an Indonesian driver’s license may be confused about how to drive abroad because you don’t have an international driver’s license.

Those worries can be a little lighter because ASEAN countries will recognize the Indonesian driving license starting June 2025 or next year. In other words, your Indonesian driver’s license can be used in ASEAN countries when the policy is in effect.

This news was conveyed through the Traffic Management Center (TMC) account of Polda Metro Jaya.

“With this policy, citizens who drive in ASEAN countries can still use an Indonesian driving license without needing an international driving license,” wrote the TMC Polda Metro Jaya account.

TMC Polda Metro Jaya also provided information on a list of ASEAN countries recognizing Indonesian driving licenses. Some of these countries include:

  • Philippines
  • Thailand
  • Laos
  • Vietnam
  • Myanmar
  • Brunei
  • Singapore
  • Malaysia

An Indonesian driver’s license can be used in several ASEAN countries and Australia. However, it will only be valid if tourists from Indonesia use Hertz, a car rental company in Australia that rents vehicles in more than 200 locations.

If Indonesian tourists do not use Hertz, they are required to show an International driving license if they still want to drive a car in Australia. According to the safetravel.kemlu.go.id page, an Indonesian driving license can actually be used in several regions and cities in Australia.

The list of regions includes:

  • Australia Capital Territory (Canberra)
  • Victoria (Melbourne)
  • Northern Territory (Darwin)

To be able to use an Indonesian driver’s license, tourists need to translate their driver’s license into English at the nearest Indonesian Representative in Australia or to an Australian sworn translator (NAATI).

For information, this provision only applies to temporary visitors, such as business travelers or those conducting short courses.

Meanwhile, this provision does not apply to permanent residents.
