On Friday, 19th of May 2023, Stephane Gagnon (50), a Canadian citizen, was detained by a joint team of police and immigration officers in Canggu, Bali. Stephane Gagnon is an international fugitive identified by Interpol.
Stephane Gagnon was detained by the joint officers in Vila Aman, Canggu Village, North Kuta District, Badung Regency, Bali, as stated by Kombes Pol Stefanus Satake Bayu Setianto, the head of public relations for the Bali Police.
“On the 19th of May 2023, Kadiv Hubinter Mabes Polri issued a letter directing us to detain the suspect (Gagnon),” Bayu said.
“The Canadian authorities have wanted Gagnon since the 5th of August in 2022,” Bayu added.
The Canadian government sought after Gagnon for allegedly engaging in fraud and forgeries against hundreds of victims, resulting in losses of hundreds of millions of rupiah.
“Furthermore, the suspect was temporarily held in Bali for 20 days, from the 20th of May to the 8th of June 2023, following the Temporary Detention Warrant Number: SP.Han/46/V/2023/Ditreskrimum” claims Bayu.
Gagnon, the person in question, resides in Bali on a visitor’s visa. The wanted Canadian man arrived in Bali a few months ago and has lived in Canggu ever since. “Class I Immigration for Ngurah Rai Airport is also involved in Gagnon apprehension,” explains Bayu.
Gagnon’s arrest, according to Bayu, came after the publication of a red control notice by Interpol, with the following number: A-6452/8-2022, dated the 5th of August 2022, detailing the hunt for Interpol fugitives from Canada. Bali Police then followed after him and caught the Canadian offender in Canggu.
According to Bayu, Gagnon, who is employed as a businessman in his own country, was detained by Bali joint forces of police and immigration on Friday, the 19th of May, at the property where he resides in Canggu. Gagnon’s passport was used as identification to ensure that authorities got the right person.
