Jakarta Considers FGD on Working Hours to Ease the Traffic

To reduce traffic jams, the Jakarta Provincial Government is considering splitting office working hours into two alternatives, namely at 08:00 and 10:00 local time. The Jakarta Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) Chairman of Commission B, Ismail, stated on Thursday, the 11th of May 2023, that the proposal “seems worthy of being finalized and reviewed as an alternative solution to unravel traffic jams in Jakarta.”

According to Ismail, the government must make sure that the two-hour break between the first and second office working hours will effectively reduce traffic because if the break is too short, which makes it is possible that some routes would still be jammed

Ismail stated, “In theory, this is acceptable as a substitute option.”

Before this, Syafrin Liputo, the head of the Jakarta Transportation Agency, disclosed that the capital’s congestion rank rose to 29 in the world in February 2023.

“We used to be ranked as the third-most crowded city, but that position has since dropped to 7, 11, and 31. It was rated 46 yesterday (in 2021), but as of this month, it is presently at position 29. It indicates that this requires immediate care,” said Syafrin.

Syafrin explained that the current traffic density in the capital has risen to 53%. He hoped that the Acting Governor of Jakarta, Heru Budi Hartono, might give this persistent problem significant consideration.

In light of the capital’s increasing traffic jams, the Jakarta Provincial Government intended to discuss the partition of working hours on the 17th of May, 2023.

Jakarta traffic congestion has long become the most stressful and concerning problem for the government and the general public. Even though the government has come up with many solutions, from adding more public transportation to opening up a new roadway, there is no suitable solution for this problem yet.

However, the government seems hopeful that this action might solve the crowded Jakarta traffic jam.
