Jakarta Government’s Allowed Iftar on Public Transport During Ramadan 2024

Share:

During Ramadan 2024, the Jakarta Government introduced a new policy allowing iftar on public transport. This applies to services like KRL, LRT, MRT, and TransJakarta, but passengers must adhere to specific conditions.

Typically, eating and drinking are not allowed on Jakarta’s public transportation. However, recognizing the high mobility of commuters, especially during rush hour after work, this policy aims to facilitate fasting passengers during Ramadan 2024.

Here are the key regulations summarized by Social Expat regarding iftar on public transport that passengers should be aware of:

KRL (Commuter Line)

During Ramadan 2024, PT KAI Commuter Indonesia is instituting special regulations to accommodate passengers who have iftar on public transport once it’s time to break the fast. According to Anne Purba, Vice President and Corporate Secretary of PT KAI Commuter Indonesia, each passenger is allotted a maximum of 1 hour after iftar to consume drinks and snacks on the train.

Additionally, passengers are not allowed to consume food or beverages excessively or those with strong odours. They are also required to maintain cleanliness by refraining from littering.

LRT

The Jabodetabek LRT Division has adopted a similar policy, permitting passengers to have iftar on public transport for one hour after the Maghrib call to prayer. However, passengers are prohibited from consuming heavy or strongly aromatic foods while aboard the train.

  • Consumption of rice, spicy foods, and other heavy meals is not permitted.
  • Light snacks and beverages are allowed.
  • Passengers must maintain cleanliness and orderliness.
  • Customers can break their fast with water, dates, or snacks.
