Acting Governor of Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono believes that the momentum provided by the ASEAN Summit will allow West Jakarta’s Kota Tua (Old Town) area to become an icon for bringing Jakarta to the international stage.
“Because there is an ASEAN summit, ministerial-level and heads of state-level delegates will visit the Old Town,” Hartono said on Tuesday at a city-level development planning conference at the West Jakarta Mayor’s Office.
As a result, he directed West Jakarta City Government officials to oversee the Old Town tourism area in preparation for the ASEAN Summit.
According to Hartono, all related official units should work together to plan and maintain the Kota Tua area.
The Industry, Trade, Co-operatives, Small, and Medium Enterprises (PPKUMKM) Office is one of the related units in charge of regulating street vendors in the Kota Tua area.
Furthermore, he stated that officials from the local transportation unit must be involved to ensure that the Old Town area does not become overcrowded during the summit delegates’ visit.
He stated that the Directorate General of Highways (Bina Marga) must play a role in maintaining the condition of Kota Tua’s sidewalks and street lighting.
Hartono also directed the Public Order Security (Satpol PP) to actively monitor the historic area’s order.
The acting governor also anticipates that the local administration will work with law enforcement to ensure Kota Tua’s safety.
“To collaborate in securing the ASEAN Summit, (the law enforcement apparatus) includes the district solicitor, the military district commander, and the local police chief,” he noted.
With such preparation, Hartono expressed hope that the Old Town area would be ready to welcome ASEAN Summit guests in Jakarta in September 2023.
The ASEAN Summit 2023 will be held in Labuan Bajo in May 2023 and in Jakarta in September 2023.
As the host of the 2023 ASEAN Chairmanship, Indonesia carries the overarching theme “ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth,” which means that Indonesia wants ASEAN to remain important and relevant to the ASEAN community and the rest of the world.
