Police Shot a Man Pickpocketing a Foreigner in Bali

16th August 2022 – Police shot a man named Rohmat (39) after pickpocketing a foreigner from France in Denpasar, Bali. The policeman shot Rohmat’s right calf because he’s trying to fight back when he’s being arrested.

“In the case of thievery of a foreigner from France. At the time of arrest, he resisting thus we had to take action to stop him,” said South Denpasar Police Chief, Police Commissioner Made Teja Dwi Permana at South Denpasar Police Headquarters.

Initially, the victim named Noemie Chloe Sancelme is on her way to the beach for sunbathing using a bicycle herself and putting her things in the bicycle basket. Suddenly, someone riding a motorcycle approached from behind and snatches her bag. It happened at Jalan Sekar Waru, Desa Sanur Kauh, Denpasar Selatan, on Tuesday (9/8) around 11 AM WITA.

Before taking action, the pickpocket has been following his target from Jalan Danau Tamblingan, Sanur. There are not many people around so the pickpocket closed in from the right side to snatch her bag.

“[She] has a total loss of IDR 4 million and the victim immediately reported to South Denpasar police,” he continued.

From the victim’s report, the police immediately do investigations, and finally, the culprit is successfully apprehended at Jalan Diponegoro, Pesanggaran, South Denpasar.

Evidence such as a Samsonite pink bag filled with clothes, one motorcycle that the culprit has used and IDR 1,4 million cash.

From the examination result, the culprit confessed to having done pickpocketing twice at Sanur South Denpasar areas with foreign tourists as his target. The culprit who works as a project worker claimed that he pickpockets to pay his child’s school fee.

“He has pickpocketed twice with the motive of registering his child to school. The modus operandi is the preparator gets close to his victims using his motorbike and took his victim’s belongings,” Permana said.

Rohmat is charged with Article 362 of the Criminal Code concerning theft with a maximum imprisonment of 5 years.
