The new Nusantara city logo, which was chosen from among five prior submitted designs and a public vote, was unveiled by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on Tuesday, 30th of May 2023. The President announced the winning design: “The chosen logo will be one with the ‘tree of life’ motive designed by Aulia Akbar.”
The Pancasila national principle is represented by five roots at the logo’s base, seven roots ascending upward to represent Indonesia’s major islands, and 17 rays to signify Indonesia’s Independence Day, celebrated on the 17th of August.
Jokowi expressed the hope that the new logo would encourage the new capital to build a new home for its citizens and eventually turn into a representation of life for the Indonesian people.
President Jokowi continued, “The new logo also has a fitting philosophy and vision for developing the new capital.”
“To foster pride in the nation’s personality as a vast, diverse nation, and to awaken public awareness to preserve nature, the environment, and its ecosystems,” Jokowi stated.
The President reaffirmed that the chosen logo also represents group efforts to further the construction of Nusantara City, whose completion is anticipated for next year.
More than 500 graphic designers submitted entries for the competition for the Nusantara city logo, according to Bambang Susantono, director of the Nusantara Capital Authority (OIKN).
After choosing the top 10 designs, curators from the Indonesian Association of Graphic Designers (ADGI) interviewed the designers to select the final five designs, which were then presented to President Jokowi for a public vote.
Five hundred thousand two hundred sixty people cast their ballots between the 4th of April and the 20th of May 2023, according to Susantono.
“The winning logo received 133,069 votes, equaling 26.6 percent,” Susantono reported.
Aulia Akbar, one of the founders of Bandung-based branding consultant for POT Branding House, was awarded a prize worth IDR 185 million (USD 12.3 thousand).
