Record Tourist Arrivals and Indonesian Investment Opportunities in 2024

Share:

Following the global recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Indonesian tourism sector has rebounded strongly, with a steady increase in international tourist arrivals year after year. In the first four months of 2024, the number of international visitors reached its highest point in four years, according to Acting Head of Statistics Indonesia (BPS), Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti.

Between January and April 2024, a total of 4,098,714 international tourists visited Indonesia, marking a substantial 24.85% increase compared to the same period in the previous year, which recorded 3,282,960 visits. This figure represents the highest number of international tourist arrivals in the first four months of the year since 2020.

In April 2024 alone, Malaysia contributed the most significant number of visitors, with 170,600 arrivals, accounting for 16% of the total 1,066,958 international tourist visits that month. Australia followed closely with 127,970 visits (11.99%), then China with 85,960 (8.06%), and Singapore with 81,230 (7.61%).

The average length of stay for international tourists in April 2024 was 7.92 nights. Tourists from ASEAN countries typically stayed for an average of 4.39 nights, while those from Africa averaged 14.67 nights. Notably, tourists from Yemen had the longest average stay at 57.53 nights, while those from Hong Kong had the shortest at 2.04 nights.

Boosting Investment in the Indonesian Tourism Sector

Despite the positive trends in Indonesian tourism, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, highlighted the need for more investment in the sector. During the 2024 International Tourism Investment Forum in Jakarta, he revealed that while Indonesia achieved US$3.604 billion (approximately Rp58.64 trillion) in tourism investment in 2023, 80% of that investment was concentrated in starred hotels, restaurants, cafes, and fitness centres.

In the first quarter of 2024, tourism investment reached US$943.40 million (Rp15.35 trillion), falling short of the US$3 billion (Rp48.91 trillion) target. Starred hotels, restaurants, and apartment hotels were the top recipients of foreign direct investment (FDI) during this period.

Minister Uno emphasised the need for more investment in the broader tourism ecosystem, including sustainable tourism products and inclusive community-based tourism. He expressed optimism that the 2024 International Tourism Investment Forum would attract more domestic and foreign investors to invest in Indonesia’s tourism sector, particularly in infrastructure supporting tourism.

To support sustainable tourism, Indonesia requires investments exceeding US$15 to US$20 billion. The minister highlighted Indonesia’s recognition as the world’s best Muslim-friendly tourist destination by the Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) in both 2023 and 2024, along with its significant improvement in the 2024 Tourism Development Index, rising from 32nd to 22nd place, as factors that will attract further investment.
