A rise in reports of foreign citizens breaking the terms of their visas and making a livelihood in Indonesia has led to the Bali authorities showing their teeth. A Russian stand-up comedian is one of the most recently apprehended in visa violation cases.

The 20-year-old was arrested on the 8th of March for hosting and participating in a stand-up performance without a work permit which was considered a visa violation, according to police, who identified him by his initial SS.

The authorities observed SS as he performed on the 8th of March at the Riverside Convention Center, according to Teddy Riyandi, chief of the Denpasar Immigration Office, who also said as much during a press conference the day after, which strengthened the claim that SS has done some serious visa violation.

The Canggu resident SS originally refused to acknowledge his employment as a comic in Bali. Authorities, however, claimed that the information they gathered, including flyers for the performances he appeared in, supported their claims that SS had violated his visa terms.

Teddy stated, “SS said that he was in Bali only for a vacation,” adding that the Russian national was on a social and cultural stay permit that he had acquired on the 7th of March, which in this case, indicates that he did some visa violation by working in Bali.

“His permit was only good for recreational purposes; it could not be used for business activity. We noticed that attendees paid admission to see the stand-up comedy performance.”

SS was meant to be allowed to remain in Indonesia until the 5th of May, but due to the visa violation, he was deported on the 14th of March, 2023. According to Indonesian legislation, SS is prohibited from visiting the country for at least six months.

SS was a member of a stand-up comedy ensemble made up of Russian and Ukrainian citizens, according to a fellow comedian who spoke up anonymously to protect his privacy.

“What a tragedy,” He said, “He’s a nice child.

“I dislike the way they deport individuals for participating in comedy, music, or tattoos. It pays almost minimal wages. Just grant them a visa and levy income taxes on them, and then it won’t be a visa violation case.
