Bali authorities arrested a 40-year-old Russian tourist, Vladimir Kolesov, for vandalizing a restaurant in the Seminyak area on Friday, 1st March 2024. The incident took place on 28th February 2024, when foreign tourists went on a rampage, damaging the menu display glass, furniture, padlocks, and even the restaurant stairs.

The restaurant owner suffered a total loss of IDR 10 million due to this vandalism. Promptly, the owner reported the incident to the Bali police, providing CCTV footage as evidence. Just hours before his arrest, the Russian tourist once again caused a disturbance by brandishing melee weapons at the same location.

Following the incident, residents promptly alerted the police and conducted a search of the perpetrator’s belongings on his motorbike. Among the items discovered in the trunk were an axe and other melee weapons belonging to the Russian tourist.

Instances of foreign tourists engaging in criminal activities are unfortunately not uncommon in Bali. In recent months, there has been a noticeable increase in criminal incidents and disturbances caused by foreign tourists.

In early 2024, an American tourist was involved in a criminal case wherein he assaulted a villa security guard, causing the guard’s teeth to break. The altercation arose when the tourist attempted to flee after being confronted by the guard for failing to return a motorbike rented from the villa.

According to CCTV footage, the tourist viciously attacked the security guard before fleeing the scene in a rented car. Such incidents of foreign tourists engaging in criminal behaviour have undoubtedly cast a shadow over Bali’s tourism reputation. The police and immigration authorities must take decisive action against such offenders to serve as a deterrent and restore the positive image of tourism in Bali.
