Trial of Cardless Highway Payment in Bali – On 1st June 2023, the government will begin testing the switch to a Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) cardless toll transaction system. The initial trials will take place in Bali.

The study was carried out in stages by removing one toll gate, according to Danang Parikesit, Head of the Toll Road Regulatory Agency (BPJT) of the PUPR Ministry. Other gateways can still execute daily non-cash transactions, though.

“We will start by eliminating one gate first on one toll road for MLFF. Meanwhile, the other gates can still be used for non-cash transactions with electronic cards,” explained Danang in a written statement on Wednesday, 7th of December 2023.

Cantas App

Drivers won’t have to stop to tap their electronic cards because the MLFF system will later use the Cantas app as a toll transaction system.

Danang claims that the MLFF will reduce the operational costs associated with toll collecting. Users merely need to download the Cantas program, register, and confirm that the balance is accessible in order to traverse the toll road, he said.

Because a Gantry will monitor traffic at various spots along the toll road portion to ensure there are no violations, he continued.

Bali was selected for the trial because this toll road portion is not yet overly congested, according to the Main Director of PT Roatex Indonesia Toll System (RITS), the business entity implementing the MLFF system. This factor is taken into account to facilitate the smooth operation of the new control system.

Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)

The MLFF system makes use of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) satellite technology to track vehicle movements as they travel through toll roads.

Users only need to tap the “start” button or start on the Cantas program before entering the toll road to cross it. The map-matching process will then be carried out on the central system once GPS determines the position determined by the satellite.

The map-matching process is completed when the journey is over and the car leaves the toll road. The application will automatically determine the rate, and after that, it will subtract the balance.

Tulus Abadi, the chairperson of the Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI), outlined the two primary reasons why they favour this method. The first is its effectiveness in reducing toll gate wait times, particularly during busy times.

Second, users believe that the MLFF system will improve the efficiency of vehicle traffic on toll roads. – Trial of Cardless Highway Payment in Bali
