To tackle the increasing traffic congestion in South Bali, the government is set to introduce a water taxi Bali service. This new mode of transportation is expected to provide a convenient alternative for both locals and tourists, with operations starting in December 2025.
Bali Governor Wayan Koster confirmed that the provincial government has coordinated with the Ministry of Transportation to launch the water taxi service. The ministry has pledged support in providing and operating the boats.
“The Minister of Transportation will help with sea transportation because, on land, congestion cannot be resolved quickly,” Koster said, as reported by Suara.com.
Water Taxi Bali: Planned Routes & Travel Time
The water taxi will initially operate in South Bali, focusing on connecting key areas to improve mobility.
1. Ngurah Rai Airport to Nusa Dua
- This route is expected to help tourists reach their accommodations faster, avoiding traffic on the land route.
- Estimated travel time: 25-30 minutes (compared to longer land-based journeys due to traffic).
2. Ngurah Rai Airport to Uluwatu
- Aimed at easing congestion in the popular tourist area of Uluwatu.
- During a trial using a traditional jukung boat, the journey took 35-40 minutes. The modern water taxi is expected to reduce this time to 25-30 minutes.
Deputy Minister of Transportation, Komjen Pol (Purn) Suntana, highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating, “[Insha Allah] the minister wants us to be able to do it this December so that people have another choice whether to take a car or take the water taxi from the airport.”
Beyond water taxis, the government is also considering introducing seaplanes to enhance connectivity in major tourist destinations like Bali, Labuan Bajo, and Sumba. This initiative aims to further support marine-based tourism and provide sustainable travel solutions.
The Ministry of Tourism has also expressed appreciation for the smooth transportation services during the 2024/2025 Christmas and New Year period, emphasizing efforts to integrate transport and tourism sectors for a better travel experience.
With the upcoming launch of water taxis, Bali aims to offer tourists and residents a faster, more efficient, and scenic alternative to land travel. By reducing traffic congestion, this ‘water taxi Bali’ initiative is set to enhance the overall experience of visiting Bali’s southern region.
