On the 25th of April 2023, a Chinese tourist in his late 50s drowned after getting swept away by the waves at Melasti Beach. According to reports, Lyu Dayu, 59, was last seen in Ungasan, wandering close to TT Beach Club. Before being engulfed by powerful waves, it’s estimated that he went into the sea at around 2.45 pm.

According to reports, a local tour guide named Yulianto went into the water when he saw Lyu Dayu drowning and was able to haul him to land. Lyu Dayu, the Chinese tourist, received rapid assistance from the Badung Balawista (beach lifeguards) before he was taken to Udayana Hospital for further assessment. He sadly did not survive.

I Ketut Sukadi, a spokeswoman for Denpasar Police, stated in a written statement, “The Chinese tourist was pronounced dead after receiving medical assistance from the medical staff of the Udayana Hospital. The police officer urged other tourists to use caution around the island’s waves when visiting the beach.

This is not the first incident at the Island of Gods; a similar accident happened a few months ago at Pererenan Beach, Mengwi, Badung. At that time, one tourist passed away, and six were in critical condition. Big waves swept away this six group of tourists without any warning,

Even though it is believed that big waves would usually occur during the rainy season, sudden big waves are hard to predict, especially around a cliff surrounding a beach like Melasti or Nusa Penida Island which proves to have the most incident during this year alone, which is why to be cautious to your surrounding is very important while being at the open ocean, because sometimes it could be very beautiful but also dangerous at the same time.
