TJ, a 39-year-old Australian tourist, was murdered by a café owner in South Kuta, Bali.

A cafe owner in South Kuta, Bali killed an Australian citizen who was drunk and misbehaved. The perpetrator accidentally committed the murder after hitting the customer over the head with a chair after a drunken altercation.

The perpetrator, IGW, the owner of Uncle Benz Café on Jalan Pantai Balangan in South Kuta, was apprehended.

“The victim’s head was bleeding as a result of the criminal hitting it with a chair,” said Bali Police Kombespol Head of Public Relations Stefanus Satake Bayu Setianto on Friday, 24th February 2023.

According to Setianto, the crisis started when the victim’s wife, Ni Nyoman Purniati, became concerned when her husband did not return to their villa. She contacted his younger brother, I Gede Juni Hartawan, to hunt for her spouse.

Purniati, a resident of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, had been on vacation in Bali with her husband and sister. They were staying at Villa Monyet, which is close to Uncle Benz Café.

Purniati and her sister discovered TJ on the café terrace with his head covered in blood at 03.45 a.m.

After the ambulance arrived, the man was promptly transferred to the BIMC Kuta Hospital. However, the Australian’s life could not be spared owing to bleeding on his head and injuries on his face.

According to the attacker, he did not want to kill and was merely defending himself. The Australian man, he claims, arrived at his cafe at 7.30 p.m. He then ordered liquor and started getting intoxicated.

TJ is claimed to have thrown bottles and drinking glasses onto the street while highly intoxicated. He also grabbed IGW’s waist and followed him before attempting to throw a chair.

IGW took a chair and whacked TJ over the head, according to Setianto’s report. He then went back to his residence behind the cafe.

Situations such as these are quite rare in Indonesia and it is with great sadness we share this news. Whilst we do not advocate drunken or abusive behaviour our thoughts are with both parties and their families.
